Days filled with little bit of dirt and a dash of sparkle

THE hospital bag: To gownie, or not to gownie…

In all my diva-ness (ha!), when it came to pack my hospital bag I took it very literally when told, ”bring everything you need to be comfortable” (Hey! It’s what the hospital told me to do!).  I had two bags, one for mommy & daddy, and one for baby.  It may have seemed like “a lot”, but I am very glad I brought everything that I did.  Below is my list of “must-haves” for your delivery and hospital stay with your new baby!

In addition to packing everything but the kitchen sink, I also ordered my very own Gownie (order from www.gownie.com).  I chose the more simple blue for my boy, and pink for my girl – but was SO happy that I brought my own.  Being a little OCD, I was pleased to have my own brand-spakin’-new hospital gown to wear during the most important day of my life.  They’re great, with button snaps (not those pestering ties) all down the back, and even some in front for those mamas who nurse!  The nurses all loved by “blue” and “pink” themed room (as not only did I wear the appropriate color, but so did Daddy, the grandparents, aunties, uncles, and visitors)!  I highly recommend buying and bringing TWO gowns with you.  Being induced with my son, my water broke several hours into my “labor”, it got all over my gown and I was forced to wear the dirty one throughout the entire labor/birth.  Obviously, this garment isn’t going to stay crisp and fresh – but I would’ve definitely been more comfortable laboring in a clean one…

The Hospital Bag List:

For Mom –
Hospital Gown
Pajamas x4 (bring extras, especially if you have a boy! I got peed on…!)
Robe
Slippers
Socks
Loungewear x3 (T-shirts, tracksuits. It’s nice to get “dressed” during the day, especially when visitors are coming)
Bras (Either nursing bras or sports bras…underwire is a big no-no after delivery)
Undies (pack ALOT)
Nursing pads (your milk probably won’t be in yet, but once it comes…you’ll want them!)
Maxi Pads (the hospital will provide them, but they’re huge! You may be more comfortable in your own)
Make-up/blow dryer/etc. (If you are so inclined…!)
Hair ties, Shampoo, Conditioner, Soap, Face soap, hair brush, deoterant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors/cream, lotion
Blankets (One for you and one for hubby, you’ll most likely only get a thin bed-sheet)
Pillows (I was more comfortable with my own)
Towels (You may think I’m crazy, BUT, the ones at my hospital were the size of hand towels, I was SO glad I had thought to bring my own)
Camera (& charger)
Video camera (& charger)
Cell phone (& charger)
Paperwork (antyhing you may have from insurance, doctor, ViaCord package if you’r doing cord blood banking)

For Hubby:
Underwear
Socks
Clothes for bed
Clothes for day
Any toiletries he may need
Advil (my husband had a bad headache while I was in labor with my son at 2:am and the hospital couldn’t give him any…)

For Baby:
Receiving blankets (the ones at the hospital are usually used and worn)
Warm fleece blanket (good for the car ride home)
Bibs (Saves a lot of outfit changes for those new messy eaters!)
Pajamas (4+, this whole world of eating and peeing/pooping is new to these little ones, so extra clothes never hurt)
Outfits (4+ see above, PLUS – how fun is it to dress our little ones up in the clothes we’ve been buying since we found out that he/she was coming!)
Socks & Mittens (to keep hands and feet warm)
Nail files (your hospital may provide them, nail are super sharp and the clippers are too rough for newborns)
Coming home outfit
Car seat

Optional:
Binkis (if you’re going to use them, you might want to get them used to the type you plan to use)
Bows (for your perfect little princess)

Gregory’s Old MacDonald 1st Birthday Party

For Gregory’s 1st birthday party, I wanted to take advantage of our backyard (which we were seemingly using more and more as our little guy was becoming more mobile) as well as the autumn weather setting in (if you could call it that, since South Florida rarely seems to notice any seasonal changes).  I brainstormed on all the different themes I could incorporate with an outdoor party.  I wanted something that would be enjoyable for both adults and children.  I didn’t have many toddlers on my guest list, however, I wanted Gregory to be able to enjoy his party (even if he would only remember it through pictures).

Being a big fan of nursery rhymes, I decided on Old MacDonald had a Farm.

And so, the planning began…

Did I mention, I was NINE months pregnant for this party?  Our daughter was born only 9 days later!

Cookin' my little chick & party planning! :)

E-I-E-I-O!!

As with any occasion, we marked Gregory’s first birthday (and party) with a photoshoot with our dear friend and photographer Melissa Rivera, of Love Bug Photography.

Keeping with the theme, the “Grub” for our party was BBQ-styled and catered by Char Hut.  We had burgers, BBQ chicken, baked beans, pasta/potato salad, chips, veggies, corn on the cob, and cole slaw.  Sadly, I didn’t catch a picture – but for our cooler, I bought a wheelbarrow filled it with ice and drinks – it was one of my favorite details.
Grub!

I made signs for the party out of ply wood and farm-themed fabric.  I used the signs to direct our guests to the party, the food, the bathroom (“Outhouse”, pictured below), the activities, and to wish the birthday boy a Happy Birthday.
My husband added the toilet paper…so appropriate!

We rented a tent and round tables/chairs, for our guests to enjoy themselves (and to block out that October heat…!).  I used red gingham table cloths and made centerpieces with apple baskets, hay, and “1″ signs placed in the middle.

The activities for the party were baby “Hay Rides”, for which we used my son’s new red wagon from his grandma and grandpa, and the “Petting Zoo” which included pony rides.  Both were a smash hit!  We had tons of animals – a pony, baby cow, chicks, goats, and chickens.  Magical Moments Party Rentals brought all these furry and feathery friends to our party.  They were phenomenal!  The animals were obviously well taken care of, and this family run business (the whole gang came – mom, dad, grandpa, and the kids) was a pleasure to work with. The animals were friendly and PATIENT with our little ones!
Our petting zoo

Our family of three (and a bump) playing with the animals!
Our hay rides set up for our little farmer friends!

What party is complete without CAKE?!  Especially for the FIRST birthday boy – who hadn’t yet learned the deliciousness of a birthday cake!  We went to our friends at Cake Creations (Pembroke Pines), to design the perfect first birthday cake!
It was perfect, fun, and matched our theme perfectly!
The birthday boy LOVED it…!!!
He could careless about taking a picture!

We had a great time celebrating our baby boy’s first birthday!  All of our guests came decked out in their country best, we chowed down on some of the farms best grub, hung out with the animals, and rode around the country on hay rides.  It was a great theme, and a great party!

Welcoming new things

Welcome to Sparkles & Dirt!

My name is April, and I am a mother to two beautiful children Gregory (20 months) and Meadow (9 months).  I am a stay-at-home mom, and my family is the center of my universe.  I have enjoyed the many milestones we have achieved as a family, and have worked hard to make these moments as memorable and special as possible.  It hasn’t been without a few hiccups or wrong turns along the way, but this new learning game of parenthood has been an incredible journey.  I decided to start a blog to share with my many friends tips, recipes, ideas, and helpful tid-bits that I am finding along the way.  This blog is open to everyone, but especially to moms who are trying to find a new recipe that their kids will actually eat, wanting new crafts and activities to do with their families, and planning the perfect party!  I chose the name sparkles and dirt because I have the best of both worlds – my tough, dare-devil all American boy and my delicate, soft and sweet little girl.  Our days are filled with a little bit of dirt and a dash of sparkle.
